The Institute of Education was established in 1965 as “School of Education” in the then University College of Cape Coast. It was mandated to function as the foremost institution charged with the responsibility of maintaining continual improvement of teacher education in Ghana by collaborating with stakeholders in education including the Ministry of Education (MoE), Teacher Education Division (TED) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Principals Conference (PRINCOF) etc. The name “School of Education” was changed by the then senate to “Institute of Education” in I973.
As the main examination body for Colleges of Education in Ghana, it currently examines and certificates students of Forty six (46) public and four private Colleges of Education in Ghana.
Bia Lamplighter College of Education was started by the Church of Christ as an evolving cutting-edge center for teacher in-service training in the Bia West District in the Western North Region. This effort has been
complimented and enhanced by the Government of Ghana through the absorption of this college along with four other new colleges of education as public institutions in 2015.
